The making of "Construct":
Interesting.....motion capture with realtime shading and lighting.

This would have interesting consequences for the production pipeline and schedule, since it would require at least some representative surfacing and lighting to have been done prior to motion capture.

In fact you could conceivably have a lighting artist / gaffer on set tweaking the virtual light rig in real time as dictated by the cinematographer. I guess that's what they're doing here.

So as not to lose the intent, you'd need a pipeline that supported capturing the a snapshot of the light rig and storing it with each mocap take, along with a video capture of the realtime render as it was shown to the DOP through the monitor on set. It'd be an interesting exercise!

In the case of a VFX project you may already have lighting and an environment in the form of HDRIs and lidar captured from an earlier live action shoot.

I'm a Lighting Supervisor and DOP working on full CG feature animations.
Most recently I was Lighting Director on "The Lego Ninjago Movie" and on "The Lego Batman Movie".
Prior to that I supervised the lighting on "The Lego Movie" and "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole".
I have also worked on many CG features as a Lighting Artist.
